Call for papers for the International Symposium on Listening: knowing through the body

The Art, Aesthetics, and Identity axis of the Research Group on Gender, Identity, and Diversity (GENI) at the University of Barcelona invites researchers and academics interested in the act of listening to present their communications at the International Symposium “Listening: Knowing Through the Body,” which will take place on June 19 and 20, 2025, at the Faculty of Geography and History of the University of Barcelona.

This symposium aims to create a space for reflection, action, and social transformation. The human capacity for listening has undergone profound metamorphoses throughout history, transformations that have occurred at different paces. As our way of listening changes, so too does our perception of the world.

We can treat listening as a corporeal activity (geographically, historically, and politically situated and mediated by physiological, symbolic, technological, and contextual circumstances), as another form of knowledge construction, as well as of the subject and the collective. A general question could be: How do we listen today?

From a multidisciplinary perspective—although primarily focused on the humanities and social sciences—three thematic areas have been planned, flexibly defined, that consider the issue from different perspectives:

  1. Anthropology of Listening
  2. Philosophy of Listening
  3. Pedagogy of Listening

From here, topics can be developed on listening as knowledge construction, listening and the artistic act, listening and identity, transformations of listening in the contemporary world, mediation and appropriation of listening, the historical perspective of listening, and the transdisciplinary view of listening as a social fact.
